Newcastle lost at St James' Park to Sunderland for the first time for nearly 13 years and Pardew accepted that the defeat has injured the whole club. The defeat closes the gap between Newcastle and Sunderland to two-points and both sides have five games remaining in the Premier Leagues time. Neither Newcastle or Sunderland are mathematically secure from relegation and following the defeat to Sunderland, Pardew stated that his side need to ensure they conquer the defeat rapidly. Alan Pardew said: "I don't think it is ever not likely to affect the rest of our season, a defeat like this. "We just have to make certain that in these last five games we put that right. "It is approximately us putting performances onto the end of this season that help to alleviate the memory of this defeat." Newcastle United next face West Brom at The Hawthorns but will be without goalkeeper Tim Krul for the rest of the plan after Krul dislocated his neck in the fit with Sunderland.
