West Bromwich Albion: Bob Lepkowski reflects on the increasing loss of Dave Matthews - Manchester Mail

I can't remember the exact game, or the date, but I do know Albion had dropped. And didnat the people find out about it. Gary Megsonas face was red, the mood was black. No body dared to speak. This may be an average dressing space through the country at the time. Things probably havenat changed much since soccer began. But finger and beyond the frustration pointing a solitary figure was getting on with his career - attempting to lift morale, but knowing how to behave at the correct times and when to say the right things. It was initially I met Dave Matthews. Damaging when his team got beaten, here was a man the participants could confide in, a man the manager could find comfort in, and a man who knew everyone at the club and had an instant ahi, how are you?a for every visitor to the training ground. Aware of every team-talk, a friend to all in the dressing room, Dave, Albionas former set man will need to have heard it all over the years: the tub-thumping team-talks, the parties after promotions, the despair after demotions, the awkwardness of failures, the bust-ups, the pleasure, and so much more. His was the pleasant face of a sometimes fierce attire place dynamic. A location where you needed your wits about you. A spot increasingly populated by well-rewarded teenage boys, often with egos. However his investment remained high. It was with disappointment and great surprise to all when he died late on Sunday. As the information emerged on Monday, players and administrators queued around pay their very own homage to a man who was labelled as aMr Albiona by Ron Atkinson. Dave has his invest Albion folklore - among the few those who does so with no started a ball for the membership or stood on the touchline. Albionas longest-serving person of present times was Tony Brown. Bomber spent just under twenty years at the club. Joe Reader, beginning in 1885, had an association which lasted 65 years with the membership, as a coach, player and then as a steward. Alan Everiss joined the team as a clerk in 1933, he became assistant secretary, then secretary and ultimately stepping into the boardroom. He left throughout the 1980s. Ephraim Smith also spent more than 50 years at the club but, again, in a administrative role. But no one had five years of use of the inner sanctum of Albionas dressing room, probably the most important sacristy of any soccer club. Dave was to serve under 24 administrators and many nanny bosses. He started under Gordon Clark, making the team during Roy Hodgsonas cause. The kit was prepared by him for four main cup finals, six aggressive Wembley games, a few campaigns and unexpected relegations. He contributed semi-final despair in 1969, 78, 82 and 2008. He jumped for joy when Igor Balis won THAT fee and was as over come while the next fan when effects went Albionas way on the ultimate day in 2005. Dave believed one of his best thoughts had been invited to observe on the frequency after Albionas 1993 Play-Off win against Port Vale, taking his place on the post-match Wembley team picture. In March 2011, more than 350 followers, investors, participants, former people, board members and professionals joined him for a 50th wedding dinner at The Hawthorns. It absolutely was attended by some 60 former players and seven professionals. David Giles, Ron Atkinson, Ossie Ardiles, Mark Talbot, Keith Burkinshaw, Bobby Gould, Tony Mowbray and Roy Hodgson. They cleaned their schedules due to their love for Dave. He was higher than a simple kitman, who only taken care of socks, shirts and the remainder. He was a confidante to those who mattered and a devotee to the team he adored and loved. Dave had stories to inform. he should but he never divulged more. He was party to outstanding crisis throughout his time at the club. The majority of it kept within the four walls. He also kept their own diaries of his time at the club. I'd suppose perhaps one page would be an intriguing insight into his working life. Yet I doubt there would be much negativity. In all my years of talking with Dave I donat remember him being critical or angry in public areas. There must have been frustrating times throughout his career. Not once did he speak out of turn. Of further despair is that Dave was in the process of publishing his memoirs. Later in 2013 penned by ghostwriter David Instone, the book was due out and quite definitely work-in-progress. Whether Daveas story will actually hits the shelves remains to be seen. But should it achieve this, it might just function as the best tribute of the lot.
