The excitement over the 138th edition of the Preakness Stakes is through the roof, but the focus for many of the jockeys and their respective teams has turned to Mother Nature and what role she will play in Saturday's marquee race.
Pimlico Race Course is one of the most beautiful venues in the world, and with rain possible for the event dampening the spirits of those attending and those watching at home, the hope is that the weather will hold off long enough to get the track as dry as possible in order to have a fun race that is safe for all the participants.
Kentucky Derby winner Orb won his biggest race on the wet surface of Churchill Downs, so if the horse wants to win the second leg of the Triple Crown, he'll have to overcome both the track conditions and a stellar field.
Horses like Departing, Goldencents and Mylute are all serious contenders coming into Saturday, and Orb's run to a victory will not be as easy as many thought.
With rain expected throughout the day, the hope is that the post time of 6:20 p.m. ET is not delayed or even postponed.
If you will be attending the festivities at Pimlico Race Course or watching on television, be conscious of the weather and the havoc it could wreak on race day at the Preakness Stakes.
The 2013 Preakness Stakes is finally here, and while horse-racing fans should be excited about the marquee race, Mother Nature is ensuring she is a part of the Triple Crown festivities once again.
According to Weather.com, Baltimore will be experiencing rain throughout the afternoon that will likely lead into and through the actual 6:20 p.m. ET post time.
The Doppler radar (via Weather.com) shows a huge weather front moving over Maryland at around noon and drenching the area with rain for several hours.
If you are attending the race itself or the Preakness' InfieldFest, be sure to wear rain gear in preparation of the wet conditions.
